What is an eye stroke?
In the medical world, eye stroke is known as retinal artery occlusion or blockage of blood vessels in the retina.The retina itself is an important part of the eye whose function is to capture light and convert it into visual signals to be sent to the brain.

, when blood flow to the retina is blocked, usually by a blood clot (thrombus) or plaque, the tissue in that part of the eye is deprived of oxygen.As a result, retina cells can be permanently damaged in a matter of hours.
This condition is a medical emergency, the same as a brain stroke.If not treated immediately, vision loss can become permanent.
Types and symptoms of eye stroke
Eye strokes are divided into two main types, namely:
• Central Retinal Artery Occlusion (CRAO): a blockage in the main artery of the retina that causes sudden, widespread vision loss.
• Branch Retinal Artery Occlusion (BRAO): blockage of smaller arterial branches, causing visual disturbances in some areas of the eye.
Symptoms of an eye stroke are usually painless, but vision may decrease suddenly.Sufferers often report blurred vision, the appearance of dark shadows (blind spots), or flashes of light.
If these symptoms occur, seek medical attention immediately, because time is a determining factor in saving vision.
Who is at risk?
The risk factors are similar to brain stroke.Among others:
• High blood pressure (hypertension).
• High cholesterol.
• Diabetes.
• Coronary heart disease.
• Atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in blood vessels).
• Age above 60 years.
Smoking habits and a sedentary lifestyle can also worsen the risk of retinal blood vessel blockage.
Innovation for retina patients
As cases of retinal disease, including eye strokes, increase, various parties are trying to provide solutions.One of them is through the Roche Retina Summit 2025, which brings together Indonesian retina experts and international experts to discuss the latest treatment breakthroughs.
President Director of Roche Indonesia, Sanaa Sayagh, said this activity was a form of commitment to improving the quality of life for patients with vision impairment.One of the innovations discussed is Faricimab, a drug that has been approved for the treatment of Retinal Vein Occlusion (RVO) or eye stroke, neovascular AMD, and Diabetic Macular Edema (DME).
An ophthalmologist who is also the head of the Vitreo-Retina Service at JEC Eye Hospitals & Clinics, Elvioza, revealed that the SALWEEN study showed that Faricimab could eliminate polyps in blood vessels in the retina by 61 percent.
“The study results show that Faricimab is able to reduce swelling of the retina and improve the patient’s vision,” he said.
In fact, he said more than 60 percent of patients can undergo treatment at intervals of up to four months, reducing the burden of long-term therapy.
He further said that eye strokes often come without warning, but can be prevented through regular examinations, especially for those who have high risk factors.Regularly checking blood pressure, sugar levels and cholesterol is an important step in maintaining healthy eyes and blood vessels.
“Because when sight is lost, not only does the world appear dark, but also a person’s hope and independence,” he said.
