He added that research comparing people who sleep early around 9 pm to 4-5 am, with those who sleep late around 12 pm to 9 am shows significant differences.
This shows that genetic expression related to inflammation, diabetes risk, and higher risk of cancer in people who often stay up late.
Because many workers cannot avoid night shifts, Dr Dicky believes there is a need for special policies to regulate this work pattern.
Apart from disrupting the circadian rhythm, staying up late also triggers the habit of overeating.When the body remains awake, stress hormones increase and disrupt blood sugar.
“If we are awake, our stress hormones are high. Plus we will easily get hungry. Ordering food at night is also easy, martabak, fried rice, instant noodles,” he explained.
As a precautionary measure, he suggested that people who are forced to stay up late still ensure that they get enough sleep, maintain sleep quality, regulate their diet and exercise.
