Meanwhile, in Medan there were 43 cases of ARI, six cases of diarrhea and four cases of tinea in children.
“In general, ISPA and sanitation-based diseases such as diarrhea and skin wounds dominate cases in refugee camps in North Sumatra. Until now we have carried out treatment, including managing the provision of clean water in refugee camps,” said Dr. Eka in a press conference, Monday (1/12).
Similar conditions were also found in other areas. In Padang City, from the two locations visited in West Sumatra, 80 cases of ISPA were recorded in children, four cases of diarrhea, six cases of skin disease, and four cases of morbilli (measles).
“We cannot provide data for other areas because access to locations is still limited,” explained Head of IDAI West Sumatra Asrawati.
Meanwhile in Aceh, the process of collecting data on victims is still ongoing.Considering that a number of health workers in the area were also affected and forced to evacuate.
He explained that the disease pattern in Pidie Jaya was not much different from other regions.
“In Pidie Jaya, the cases that appear are similar, especially ISPA. This week we also started to find cases of diarrhea, pneumonia or lower respiratory tract infections, as well as wounds. We are also anticipating the potential for infectious diseases such as tetanus,” said IDAI Aceh Chairman Raihan.
For other areas in Aceh, his party cannot provide more detailed data because a number of locations are still isolated.
“However, in general, the diseases that appear in refugee camps are still dominated by ISPA. We continue to map diseases that have the potential to appear during floods and after floods,” said Dr.Achievement.
Assistance for Sumatran flood victims
Flood and landslide victims who are now displaced need help to meet their basic needs.
Current urgent needs include antibiotic ointment, syrup and drops, antibiotic dissolving water, medicine spoons, diarrhea medicine, dermatitis medicine, ARI medicine, as well as drops and syrup for babies.
Apart from that, refugees also need suitable clothes, blankets, diapers, eucalyptus oil, as well as food and snacks for children.
Apart from medicine and logistics, IDAI Piprim Central Executive Chairman Basarah Yanuarso emphasized the importance of fulfilling children’s nutrition and basic needs while in refugee camps, including ensuring that breastfeeding mothers continue to receive support.
He emphasized that there should be no obstacles for mothers who want to continue providing breast milk to their children during times of disaster.
“Don’t let us not support mothers who want to continue giving breast milk,” he said.
