Japan’s largest airline announced the cancellation of 65 flights on Saturday (29/11) following a recall order for its Airbus A320 aircraft, forcing a number of its fleet to be grounded.
ANA, together with subsidiaries such as Peach Aviation, is Japan’s largest operator of Airbus single-aisle aircraft, including the A320 series.Meanwhile, ANA’s main competitor, Japan Airlines, mostly uses a Boeing fleet and does not operate A320s.
The massive recall affects more than half of Airbus’ global fleet of A320 family jets, which are the backbone of short-haul flights in Asia, especially in China and India.

Globally, there are approximately 11,300 single-aisle jets of the A320 series in service, including 6,440 core A320s.The necessary fixes primarily involve reverting to older software.Although relatively simple, these repairs must be completed before the plane is allowed to fly again.
In South Korea, Asiana Airlines said it did not expect any significant disruption to its flight schedule, as only 17 of its planes were affected by the recall.
Airbus CEO, Guillaume Faury, apologized to airlines and passengers for the sudden recall of 6,000 A320 series aircraft.
As reported
Reuters,
this number accounts for more than half of the global fleet of the A320 family, which recently overtook the Boeing 737 as the most delivered aircraft model in the aviation industry.
“I would like to extend a sincere apology to our airline customers and passengers impacted now,” Faury wrote on LinkedIn.
Nonetheless, Asia aviation analyst Brendan Sobie said the software update was “not as chaotic as some people make it out to be,” although “it did create some short-term headwinds for operations.”
The recall warning issued on Friday (28/11) follows an accidental loss of altitude on a JetBlue flight from Cancun, Mexico, to Newark, New Jersey, on October 30.The incident injured 10 passengers, according to France’s accident agency, BEA, which is investigating the incident.
Interestingly, the timing of the issuance of this recall warning is considered quite lucky for several airlines.
The warning comes at a time of day when many European and Asian airlines are starting to reduce their flight schedules, freeing up time to make improvements. However, in the United States, the warning came during the day ahead of the busy Thanksgiving holiday travel weekend.
