Flash floods and landslides that hit a number of areas in the province

since November 26, causing serious damage, including destroying the Ketambe Orangutan Research Station (SP).
SP, which is located in the Lawe Gurah Resort area, is the oldest orangutan research center in the world.
Due to the serious damage, the Ketambe Orangutan SP was forced to close temporarily until the post-disaster recovery process was complete.This closure applies to all research activities and visits, for the sake of mutual safety.

The closure of SP Ketambe is a big blow, especially for the world of global science and conservation.This station has been operating since 1971 and is known as a center for Sumatran orangutan studies.
“The Ministry of Forestry confirms its commitment to restore the station as a research center for Sumatran orangutans,” said a statement in a release from the Leuser Conservation Forum (FKL), Friday (5/12), as reported

The government also invites researchers and conservation partners to continue to coordinate and adjust field work plans.
The flash flood disaster occurred on Thursday (26/11).The water started to rise around 11.00 WIB.Staff at the site, who were building a prayer room at the time, tried to put up a barrier, but conditions quickly deteriorated.
Towards the afternoon, around 16.00 WIB, river water rushed in quickly and heavily.The cook and builder, as well as four officers who were at the location, managed to save themselves from the strong current and were evacuated to Ketambe Village.
“Even though major damage occurred, four officers at the location survived after managing to save themselves from the strong current,” explained the FKL release.
When checked the next day, all the facilities and infrastructure at SP Ketambe had been swept away by the flood.Total damage affected meeting rooms, library rooms, research rooms, prayer rooms, public kitchens, clean water facilities, and cable car crossings.

The Long History of Global Conservation
SP Orangutan Ketambe, which was founded in 1971 by the Primate Research Center (PPA), the Ministry of Forestry, and WWF, is the oldest orangutan research station in the world.
Since 2015, SP Ketambe has been jointly managed by the Gunung Leuser National Park Center (BBTNGL) and FKL.Among the three research stations managed by BBTNGL, SP Ketambe was the most badly damaged due to floods and landslides.
For more than five decades of operation, SP Ketambe has published thousands of scientific papers and produced a number of leading conservation experts, making it an influential institution in global eyes.
