Mary Shelley’s 1818 work is being widely discussed after being broadcast on
Netflix
recently.
This film was directed by Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro, based on his interest in monsters and strange things.
This film took years to make, including the crew conducting an extensive search process throughout Europe to find the best shooting locations.

feels like an old movie made in the heyday of Hollywood.I want it to make it beautiful and operatic,” said del Toro, as reported by

Filming will begin in Toronto, Canada, in early 2024. Various locations in England were chosen as filming locations for the film which tells the story of bringing the corpse back to life.
The director said that in this film most of the locations used were transformed again.That way, in the film, the audience seems to see real scary sets and locations.
For Victor Frankenstein’s ancestral home, del Toro chose filming locations in several different houses to create a set that met his expectations.These include Gosford House and Dunecht House in Scotland, as well as Burghley House and Wilton House in England.
1. Wilton House, England
Del Toro most likes the Wilton House in England, because it has its own sentimental and artistic value for del Toro.After investigating, this house is also the same shooting location in his favorite film, namely
Barry Lyndon
directed by Stanley Kubrick.

] has a very different vibe from ours [
Frankenstein
], but we often look at it as a reference because it’s set during the same period, and there’s candlelight, mood lighting, that kind of thing,” del Toro said.
For filming Frankenstein, the crew only used the dining room and grounds for the cemetery.
The 21-acre Palladian-style Wilton House was the home of the 18th Earl and Countess of Pembroke.Wilton House is currently closed to the public, but will reopen at Easter 2026.
2. Burghley House, England
Apart from Wilton House, another house, Burghley House Lincolnshire in England, was also used for filming.Some of the locations used in the house are the great hall, the bow room, and the old kitchen.
3. Gosford House, Scotland
Gosford House in Scotland is used as the main house for the exterior display of Victor’s ancestral home.The home’s iconic double staircase is highlighted in the poignant wedding scene at the end of the film Frankenstein.
This neoclassical style Gosford house covering an area of 5 thousand hectares is open for public visits.
4. Dunecht House, Scotland
While Dunecht House in Scotland has a mix of eclectic and Greek styles.This home is popular for its golf course.The home’s ornate library is featured in the early scenes of the film.
5. Edinburgh
Del Toro took the same location for the city atmosphere as depicted in the novel, namely Edinburgh.Including Parliament Square and the alleys with historical charm there.

which suits his wishes.
“It’s a great treasure of a city, almost 360 degrees of historic buildings. Our choice was right on the Royal Mile, which was amazing. We shot around all the tourists,” del Toro said.
6. Lake Nipissing, Canada
At the beginning of the film there is also a dramatic scene at the North Pole.In this scene, del Toro wants to highlight again the main theme of Shelley’s novel, namely the power and majesty of nature.
Some of the snowy scenes in the film were filmed on Lake Nipissing, Canada’s North Bay.This place is considered capable of bringing to life how harsh the Arctic is without having to film in the extreme poles.
