estimates as many as 500 thousand plane tickets to

potentially canceled by the traveler

Not accepting these comments, China responded with a boycott of Japanese tourism.Chinese citizens warned to avoid travel to Japan.
This counterattack from China immediately had an impact on Japanese tourism.Suddenly shares of tourism and retail companies in Japan plummeted in just a matter of days.
Based on daily data collected by independent aviation analyst Li Hanming, airline ticket bookings by Chinese citizens to Japan have dropped drastically, as reported by
VN Express
.
On November 15 there should be 1.5 million airline tickets. However, only 1 million remained to continue flying two days later.
Hanming noted that around 500 thousand flights to Japan had been canceled by Chinese travelers.
He said to
AFP
According to his experience while building the database since 2023, ticket bookings usually fall by around five percent from day to day. However, for China-Japan flights after this controversy, the decline was very significant, namely around 33 percent.
“There will definitely be more cancellations if tensions rise,” Hanming said.
Hanming’s analysis makes more sense because recently several of China’s largest airlines have offered full refunds to passengers who booked plane tickets to Japan until December 31.
Chinese tourism companies also reacted by no longer accepting Japan travel bookings. There is also one that removed all travel options to Japan from the app.
Nevertheless, there are still some people who hope that flights to Japan can operate as usual. They believe that the Japanese tourism boycott situation is only temporary.
Chinese tourists are the largest source of visitors to Japan.Nearly 7.5 million visitors were recorded from January-September 2025, with spending more than US$1 billion per month in the third quarter.
