Around 50 percent of Indonesian people are used to using food as a way to overcome or relieve emotions, not bodily needs.
Diet
This is considered by experts to be the trigger for the increase
food waste
in the household.
“Our diet is a big factor that is often overlooked,” said Dr Ray Wagiu Basrowi, MKK, FRSPH, Secretary General of the Indonesian Gastronomy Community (IGC), Tuesday (2/12), as reported by

Health Collaborative Center (HCC) research in 2024 shows that 5 out of 10 Indonesians will experience it
emotional eating
.They tend to choose or consume food in response to stress, boredom, or fatigue.
According to Ray, this habit can improve
food waste
up to three times.He explained,
food waste
This often happens when foods are chosen because of trends or prestige, not because of nutritional needs.
“This is not just a matter of kitchen technicalities, but concerns the transformation of people’s eating patterns,” he stressed.
He believes that changes in consumption behavior must start from an early age, especially through the family environment.
IGC general chairman Ria Musiawan said that dietary education could be strengthened through government programs, including Free Nutritious Meals (MBG).Teachers are also the main targets because they are involved in distributing food at schools every day.
Ria said that many local values are still relevant for teaching children to appreciate food. One of them is the traditional message, “Come on, finish the food, Dewi Sri will cry”, which has long been used by parents to instill a culture of not wasting food.
Dewi Sri is the goddess of rice in Indonesian tradition and is a symbol of the importance of food in the lives of agricultural communities.
According to Ria, this philosophy can be used again to increase the awareness of the younger generation.
“That advice has stuck to this day, including for me. And we want teachers to convey messages like this again so that children are aware that food must be finished,” he added.
IGC is currently running this educational program in Jakarta, Bandung, Cirebon, Bogor and Yogyakarta with the support of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN).
Apart from eating culture, educational material covers basic eating etiquette, the correct way to sit, and chewing techniques for health.
“The hope is that children will realize that food is very important for their cognitive development. The correct way to eat is as important as the food itself,” concluded Ria.
