Epidemiologist Dicky Budiman explained that the post-flood environment really supports the transmission of various diseases.
“Flooding increases human exposure to rat urine. This increases the risk of leptospirosis outbreaks,” he said, Sunday (6/12), quoted from

Here are four diseases that often increase after floods and landslides:
1. Leptospirosis
Leptospirosis is the disease that most often surges after floods.Water mixed with the urine of rats or other reservoir animals increases exposure to humans. This infection can cause high fever, muscle aches and serious complications if left untreated.
2. Diarrhea
Diarrhea is an annual problem after floods in Indonesia.Polluted clean water sources, limited sanitation facilities, and open defecation behavior have caused the transmission of fecal-oral diseases to increase sharply.
“Every year, the increase in diarrhea cases triggers a rapid outbreak,” said Dicky.
3. Typhoid Fever (Typhus)
Food and drink contaminated with flood water can increase the transmission of typhoid fever.Disaster-affected areas usually have public kitchens and food distribution that are prone to hygiene, so the risk of infection is greater.
4. Diseases caused by mosquitoes, dengue fever and malaria
Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and malaria also have the potential to increase one month after the disaster.Lots of standing water is an ideal place for mosquitoes to breed.
Anticipate so that the epidemic does not spread
Dicky emphasized that prevention must be adjusted to the route of transmission.Following are the steps that need to be taken:
1. Diseases transmitted through water (waterborne)
• Guaranteed provision of clean water.
• Emergency sanitation must be organized and not pollute water sources.
• Residents are asked not to defecate in the open.
2. Diseases transmitted through food (foodborne)
• Food should be washed and processed in clean water.
• Wash your hands with soap before eating and after going to the toilet.
• Public kitchens are required to maintain cleanliness and food storage.
3. Diseases transmitted through the air (airborne)
• Children, the elderly and pregnant women should not stay in crowded evacuation rooms.
• Make sure the tent has good ventilation and air circulation.
• Public kitchens need adequate circulation to prevent ISPA.
