What is moyamoya?
Moyamoya is a rare, progressive disease that causes narrowing or blockage of the main arteries at the base of the brain, especially the carotid arteries. This condition reduces blood flow to the brain and triggers the formation of small blood vessels that are fragile and break easily.
Quoted from the Neuro Surgery Partners page, the name ‘moyamoya’ comes from Japanese which means ‘blur’ or ‘puff of smoke’.This term describes the appearance of small blood vessels that form to compensate for blockages, appearing like smoke on medical imaging.
Symptoms of moyamoya disease
Symptoms of moyamoya can vary depending on the severity and age of the patient. In children, one of the complaints that often arises is sudden falls due to disruption of blood flow to the brain.
In another case, a 4-year-old toddler was reported to suddenly be unable to speak after crying, which could also be an early sign.
Common symptoms of moyamoya include:
• Stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA): Sudden weakness, numbness, or difficulty speaking.
• Seizures: More common in pediatric patients.
• Headache: Continuous or quite severe due to reduced blood flow.
• Cognitive and developmental delays: Especially in children, such as difficulty learning or concentrating.
• Vision problems: Blurred or double vision.
• Paralysis or weakness: Usually on one side of the body (hemiparesis).
