This condition shows that Indonesian women’s health is still in a crucial phase. The following are some of the causes of maternal mortality continuing to increase in Indonesia as revealed by Budi:
1. Bleeding to eclampsia
Data for 2022 shows that around 3,500 mothers died due to various pregnancy complications.Of this figure, 20.9 percent was caused by bleeding, 22.4 percent by eclampsia, and 4.9 percent due to infection.
These three are complications that can actually be prevented if the mother gets proper and fast treatment.
2. Early marriage
According to Budi, one of the factors that contributes to the high MMR is the high rate of early marriage. The percentage reaches 10.03 percent for women under 18 years of age.Meanwhile, the birth rate for teenagers 15-19 years old is 20.49 per 1,000 people.
“Early marriage is a real phenomenon, even in big cities,” said Budi.
He explained that emotionally, teenagers are not ready to undergo pregnancy and parenting.Social and cultural pressure can also worsen their psychological condition, which ultimately has an impact on the quality of health of the mother and baby.
3. The body is not ready
On the biological side, pregnancy at too young an age also has big risks.Adolescent reproductive organs, especially those under the age of 16, are not fully ready to accept and maintain a pregnancy.
“The reproductive organs are not ready to carry a fetus weighing around 3 kilograms for nine months,” he explained.Placental attachment is also at greater risk of being less than optimal, thereby increasing the chance of developing high blood pressure and preeclampsia.
